Dr. Margaret J. Schmitz is a Milwaukee-based art and design historian, researcher, educator, artist, and French Bulldog mom. Her scholarship focuses on intertextual exchange and theories of temporality and decoloniality in visual culture from the turn of the century to now. Her current research project centers on the American Indian Movement-era newspaper Akwesasne Notes and its graphical and illustrative contributions to the visual cultures of decolonization and social justice throughout the 1970s. Schmitz is a faculty member at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design where she is responsible for developing courses on illustration and communication design history as well as contemporary art and design theory. She holds a BFA from Aquinas College, an MA from Sotheby’s Institute of Art London, and a PhD from the University of Kent.
