MARN’s Gallery, located within the MARN ART + CULTURE HUB, strives to build a cultural space that supports both its members and the overarching community through projects, exhibitions, and events that push the boundaries of a ‘traditional white box gallery’. The mission of the gallery is to serve as a platform for amplifying artists who are bold, collaborative, and representative of the robust Southeast Wisconsin art community.

Run by Gallery Director Riley Niemack in collaboration with the Curatorial Advisory Committee.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

“Forever In A Day”

July 22 – August 14, 2022

MARN is pleased to present Forever In A Day, an exhibition running July 22 to August 14, 2022 at the MARN ART + CULTURE HUB chronicling local artist Rakim Wil’s photography career, sharing a glimpse of what’s to come for the emerging creative. The exhibition showcases stunning portraits, often shot within the inner city, that preserve a moment in time through Wil’s lens. Wil selected photographs that he feels are a reflection of himself, and all of us, in many ways.

Zooming in on Milwaukee as well as cities around the country, Wil aims to highlight the African diaspora while showcasing his unique shaded and sometimes saturated style.

Forever In A Day is produced in collaboration with Wolf Studios MKE and included large format printing donated by MARN.

About the Artist:

Rakim Wil is a self taught – interdisciplinary designer, musician, and photographer who lives and works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s North Side. Starting as a child, Ra immersed himself in the juxtaposition of classic art education in school and his family’s obsession with Black culture at home. Soul, hip hop & electronic influenced sounds of the 21st century was the soundtrack.

Growing up around both poverty and opulence, Ra was ultimately influenced by the builders in his community. They brought forth beauty so he was tasked with the question of what to do with his hands. Rakim then began taking photographs of the city and himself at age 15 and producing music at age 18 as a means to freeze time and understand our world as we pass by it so easily. As he grew fonder of photography as an art form and his studies of the diaspora deepened, Ra found a love for portraits of others within the community and pronouncing their stories.

MARN celebrated Gallery Night & Day presenting “Forever In A Day on July 22, 5-8PM & July 23, 10-4PM.

MARN Celebrated “Forever In A Day” After Party on July 23, 5-7:30PM at the HUB.

During the panel discussion SIM and Rakim Wil discussed how their creative practices intersect and how the “Forever In A Day” exhibition came to be.
