2023 Spring Call for MARKETPLACE Artists

DETAILS

The Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN) is pleased to announce a Call for submission to our members only MARKETPLACE for Spring 2023. All CREATIVE level members residing within Wisconsin are encouraged to sell collections and limited editions of small works on consignment in the MARN MARKETPLACE. 

The MARN MARKETPLACE is a curated retail art market located within the MARN ART + CULTURE HUB on 191 N Broadway, Suite #102, Milwaukee, WI. The initiative strives to support MARN Members as a consignment platform for small works & artisan goods. All MARKETPLACE inventory is also available online at marnarts.org/marketplace

Examples of goods to sell include but are not limited to: artisan goods, jewelry, apparel, home décor, ceramics, zines, glass art,  prints, sticker packs, posters, greeting card packs, publications … the functional and the funky!

Although there is no price limit requirement, artists in the MARKETPLACE have achieved success with items priced $20 – $80, with consistent brand aesthetic, professional packaging and have informational tags attached to artwork.  Items must be no larger than 15” x 15” x 15” each; exceptions may be considered for nontraditional pieces.  For more information on submissions, see “Submission Specifics” below. 

Duration of consignment term will be determined with the MARKETPLACE Curator for the Spring of 2023. Memberships must be in good standing before the call closes to qualify.  Become a MARN Member Today!

*COVID – 19 Statement: MARN reserves the right to adjust the consignment period and associated dates in order to ensure the safety of staff, creatives and patrons.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SELECTED ARTISTS:

  • Face masks are highly recommended at the MARN ART + CULTURE HUB for drop off, install, and pick up of work.

  • Within a week of selection notification, artists must supply a filled out MARN Consignment Sheet and Images of each product to be sold.

  • Upon drop-off, Artists must have a completed MARN-specific Inventory List, NO EXCEPTIONS.

  • Upright work must be delivered ready to display in the MARKETPLACE shelves, including any special hardware, materials, and equipment.

  • Hanging work must be dropped off, “gallery ready,” with hanging hardware (i.e. d-rings, saw tooth hangers…)

  • All art should be high quality items that are able to be handled and easily packaged when sold. 

  • MARKETPLACE artists must be prepared for a 40 minute drop off for

    • Inventory and photographing of items,

    • an artist polaroid portrait taken by the MARN team (to be used in future MARKETPLACE Social Media Campaigns).

  • Work must be delivered and retrieved in a timely manner coordinated with the MARKETPLACE Curator.

  • Inventory must remain onsite until the end of the consignment period. No early pick-ups. 

    • Work may not be sold or donated outside of MARN during the duration of consignment.

  • Artists are responsible for arranging delivery of works to and from the MARKETPLACE, and any transportation expenses.

  • MARN’s administrative fee on all sales during the duration of consignment is 35%. Please take this into consideration when you are pricing your items.

  • At MARN’s discretion, all art will be displayed for public viewing. All works sold will be packaged accordingly by the MARKETPLACE Curator.

  • MARN will insure the work during the consignment period.

WHO CAN APPLY?

  • Applicants must be a MARN Member at the CREATIVE STUDENT, CREATIVE, or CREATIVE BUSINESS level prior to the deadline.

  • Artists working in all mediums are welcome to apply.

  • Entries may be from individuals, collaborators, or teams.

  • Previous MARKETPLACE Artists that meet above requirements are encouraged to apply to this cycle. Please note that priority will be given to new artists and it is recommended to apply with new work not previously exhibited.

In support of our members, MARN has decided to waive this submission fee.

Applicants must first log in to or create a Submittable Account to submit. Once your application is created with an account, it can be saved as a draft for future edits; however, it is recommended that all materials are developed outside of the platform and copied and pasted / uploaded once finalized.

Late submissions will not be accepted. It is recommended that applicants submit at least 25 minutes prior to the deadline in the event that troubleshooting is required. MARN does not have access to draft submissions. MARN does not accept any applications through email or in person. If you have any issues submitting your application, email the MARKETPLACE Curator Isabel Recalde at  izzi@marnarts.org 24 hours prior to the submission deadline.

Confirmation of MARN CREATIVE STUDENT, CREATIVE, or CREATIVE BUSINESS Membership Status. Applicants must provide a link to their MARN Membership Directory Profile (please update your online profile).

Preferred Artist Name on Signage (Business name, artist name, collective name, etc.)

Pronouns (He/Him, She/Her, They/Them, She/They etc..)

100 Word Max Artist Bio (Roughly one paragraph about your work/process written in third person)

Headshot an/or Photo of You at Work

  • Image files should be .jpg or .png and a minimum 72 dpi & 1200 pixels wide

SELECTION PROCESS

Selected applicants will be notified via email by the end of Monday, February 20th, 2023. Submissions will be reviewed by MARN’s Marketplace team. Selections will be based on the quality of the work, the professionalism of the application, the curation of the retail area, and alignment with MARN’s Mission, Vision, and Values. Applications that do not follow the specified guidelines for eligibility, formatting, and content will not be considered. 

However, submissions which challenge traditional interpretation of the call are welcome if their content is strong. 

There is no guarantee that your submission will be selected.
