History

The Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN) was established in 2000 by local artists to address the need for a supportive infrastructure that connected artists and provided professional resources. Initially, MARN focused on creating a network to foster communication and collaboration among Milwaukee’s diverse creative community. The organization recognized that many artists lacked access to career development tools and opportunities to showcase their work.

In its early years, MARN was driven by grassroots efforts to build community partnerships, offering workshops, exhibitions, and networking events. By connecting artists, galleries, and organizations, MARN helped cultivate a more cohesive creative ecosystem in Milwaukee. Over time, the organization expanded its mission to include advocacy for local artists and the development of programs designed to address both professional and economic challenges.

In 2007, MARN launched its MARNmentorship program, a flagship initiative that pairs emerging artists with established mentors, providing guidance on both artistic practice and career navigation. This mentorship program became central to MARN’s mission of empowering artists and fostering growth.

A key milestone in MARN’s history was the opening of the MARN Art + Culture Hub in 2021. Located in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, the Hub includes gallery spaces, a marketplace, and event spaces designed to elevate local artists’ visibility and provide them with opportunities to sell their work. The Hub also became home to MARN’s educational programs, community events, and exhibitions.

Throughout its history, MARN has remained committed to its core mission of supporting artists in Milwaukee. It continues to expand its services and programming, with an emphasis on accessibility, equity, and inclusion.
