Meet Marisa Tirado, author of Selena Didn't Know Spanish Either and Amanda Kuehne, CHICANO POWER contributing artist with La Revo Books.
Tirado and Kuehne will consider the question of what it means to be Chicano in context with the feature exhibition ¡Chicano Power! on view at MARN September 15 - October 22. Come early to enjoy the exhibition and order a featured Mango-mimosa at the MARN Cafe!
Kuehne offers her responses:
What does it mean to be Chicano/a/x to you?
"My ancestors came from Mexico across the Rio Grande and landed in New Mexico (Albuquerque) and southern Colorado (Menasa). They brought with them the pride of being humble, hard working and family oriented. When I look in the mirror I see the generations of men and women who worked to better the world with what they had. Being Chicana is one of the most important features of my life as it has molded me to the creative and ambitious person I am today."
How has being Chicano/a/x had an impact on you?
"Everything I know I know through the lens of being Chicana. I see food, relationships, religion, and faith as a direct tie to the women and men in my family that came before me. My nana Rosa was the first to instill pride in who we were and where we came from. "Mija, don't let anyone tell you there is anything wrong about being you. You are Hispanic and we are a proud people." I am proud of who I am because of the culture and places I have come from."
